Novalis was a German poet who influenced the later Romantic thought, he was sometimes called the "prophet of Romanticism".
The central image of Novalis' visions, a blue flower, from the Ofterdingen novel, became later a symbol of longing among Romantics. Even students of German philology in Japan read this now.
